In a dark basement beneath a Chinese restaurant in Waddon, Surrey, a trove of musical treasure was discovered. Stuck together with mould, fused by time and damp conditions, was a vinyl recording of a long forgotten jazz band - Ben C Winn and the Croydon Keyboard Orchestra of 1935.
Newspaper archives reveal unfavourable reviews of the combo, one journalist describing them as "bawdy, uncultured and silly" and another summed them up as "far too progressive".
And truly they were progressive. Incorporating jazz, ragga, rap and blue comedy the CKO were indeed ahead of their time. Take for instance the use of portasound keyboards and synthesisers long before they were even invented. Truly groundbreaking. And now, for the first time, available for download.
